History

Annu Kapoor was born as Anil Kapoor on 20th February 1956 in Itwara, Bhopal. Due to the poor financial condition of his family, Annu Kapoor had to quit school and take up small jobs to earn money. His father was the owner of a traveling Parsi theatre. He insisted Annu Kapoor join his company.

After working for some time at his father’s theatre, Kapoor joined the National School of Drama in Delhi, where he showcased his skills as a fine actor.

Work Life

Seeing Annu Kapoor’s work in plays, Shyam Benegal offered him a role in his 1983 film Mandi. From this point onwards, his three decade long journey in Bollywood started and still counting. Annu Kapoor appeared in several more films: Mr. India, Hum, Ram Lakhan, Tezaab, and Saat Khoon Maaf. The critics lauded him for his comic role in the film Vicky Donor, for which he also won several awards.

Apart from acting, Annu Kapoor also directed Abhay: The Fearless, a children’s film with an amazing star cast such as Nana Patekar, Moon Moon Sen, and Benjamin Gilani. This movie won the National Film Award for best children’s film in 1995.

Besides films, Annu Kapoor has also starred in various television shows. His debut on television was on Doordarshan’s TV serial Khari Khari, followed by Darpan and Patichar. He gained immense popularity for hosting the hit music reality show, Antakshari. For 13 years since 1992, he kept his audience entertained with his knowledge of music and singing through the show. He also hosts the show Golden Era with Annu Kapoor, where he tells the unheard stories of famous Bollywood legends.

Annu Kapoor also does a radio show called ‘Suhaana Safar on 92.7 Big FM with Annu Kapoor’. The show airs across the nation, where Annu Kapoor with various unforgotten melodies of Bollywood, Kapoor tells his listeners the untold stories of big stars of Indian Cinema.
