As per the Hindu Mythology, it is been considered that Yamraj, whoo is the God of death visited his dearest sister Yami (Yamuna) on this day. She welcomed him by performing an aarti and put a tilak on his forehead. Also she offered him a garland and special eateries including delicious sweets to relish. In return to all this, he surprised his sister with a unique gift as a token of his love and care for her. Thus Yamraj on that day declared that brothers who would be receiving tilak and aarti by their loving sisters would not be frightened. This is the reason that this day is also recalled as the ‘Yama Dwitiya’.
There is another popular story behind the celebration of Bhai Dooj
According to this, Hindu Lord Krishna returned to his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon king Narakasur. He was welcomed by his sister with tilak on his forehead and aarti with holy flame, flowers and sweets. The same day people celebrate Bhai Dooj.
