Why Festival of Bhai Dooj is Celebrated?

The bond of love and affection between a brother and sister is very special and the festival of Bhai Dooj makes this bond more special and cheerful. The festival of Bhai Dooj is the celebration of Brother-Sister bond. It is also referred as ‘Bhaiya Dooj’ or ‘Bhai Phota’ and is celebrated with great enthusiasm by brothers and sisters of every age.

Every year after the cheerful celebration of Diwali festival, brothers and sisters get together again to strengthen their bond of love and affection once again on the day of Bhai Dooj celebration. It is another festival like Raksha Bandhan that celebrates the sibling bond of love and strengthens their bond with more love and affection for each other.

On the second day after Diwali that is on 1st November 2016, people of India will again celebrate this meaningful festival that will bring brothers and sisters close to each other once again. And the thing that is of great importance in the festival of Bhai Dooj is the ritual of Tilak that is the vermilion mark a sister puts on her brother’s wrist. There are many stories behind the ritual of Bhai Dooj Tikka or Tilak that recites the truth behind the celebration of Bhai Dooj celebration.

This is why Bhai Dooj is celebrated??
As per the Hindu Mythology, it is been considered that Yamraj, whoo is the God of death visited his dearest sister Yami (Yamuna) on this day. She welcomed him by performing an aarti and put a tilak on his forehead. Also she offered him a garland and special eateries including delicious sweets to relish. In return to all this, he surprised his sister with a unique gift as a token of his love and care for her. Thus Yamraj on that day declared that brothers who would be receiving tilak and aarti by their loving sisters would not be frightened. This is the reason that this day is also recalled as the ‘Yama Dwitiya’.

There is another popular story behind the celebration of Bhai Dooj
According to this, Hindu Lord Krishna returned to his sister Subhadra after defeating the demon king Narakasur. He was welcomed by his sister with tilak on his forehead and aarti with holy flame, flowers and sweets. The same day people celebrate Bhai Dooj.

Significance of Bhai Dooj in India
In many states of India like in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Maharashtra West Bengal, Gujarat and other, Bhai Dooj festival is of great significance. It is the day for brothers and sisters to remember their responsibilities for each other and a day to reunite and strengthen their bond of love and care.
